Massage oils for too sensitive baby skin

Choosing massage oil for your baby can be very tricky if it has way too sensitive skin. Vegetable oils high in oleic acid like olive oil or high-oleic sunflower oil is a big negative for eczema, broken skin or sensitive skin. This is because they make your baby’s skin more permeable leading to more dry and tender skin.

On the other hand, vegetable oil high in linoleic acid is better for sensitive skin. Linoleic acid is high in polyunsaturated fats and hence better for your baby’s skin. Again, oil with monounsaturated fats is high in oleic acid. Try to avoid that too.

Go for reputed brands with ISI and AGMARK certification. Loosely sold or unbranded oils cannot be trusted for your child’s sensitive skin.

How to massage your baby

  • Try using gentle upward strokes when massaging your baby. And do not apply pressure of any kind on your baby’s head thinking that will make it round.

  • Gently wash off the oil while bathing the baby. Residual massage oil may lead to skin rashes during hot and humid summers.
  • Do not apply oil on your baby’s nose, navel or ears. It may lead to infections.

Here is a tip: Massage your baby regularly till it turns one or two. Learn different ways of massaging for your own mother or other experienced mothers if you are a first timer.
